What is Steel?

Carbon steels are widely used in a variety of applications, including civil and mechanical construction, re-rolling, auto parts, furniture, tubes, agricultural equipment, household appliances, and parts with light forming or bending.

Aperam’s medium- and high-carbon steels, and alloyed steels are made to meet the most stringent of specifications. Developed with a different or more restricted chemical composition than what’s mandated by national (ABNT/NBR) and international (ASTM, DIN, SAE) standards, these steels meet the specific requirements of our customers while also satisfying general market needs.

Our carbon steels are available as plates and as hot rolled coil in widths between 980 mm and 1,500 mm and with a thickness ranging from 2.0 mm to 12.70 mm.

Medium Carbon Steel

Medium carbon steels have a carbon content of between 0.30% and 0.50%.
When cold-rolled, these steels are favored by the automotive industry for manufacturing such parts as door locks, tongue and belt supports, springs, and washers. Outside the auto industry, medium carbon steels can be found in a range of applications, including the toe caps of industrial safety boots, the soles of shoes, trowels and shovels, pressure cooker handles, nail clippers, and motorcycle chains – to name only a few.  With the addition of manganese, these steels can also be used in applications requiring robust resistance to wear and tear.

High Carbon Steel

High carbon steels have a carbon content above 0.50%.
They are used in the manufacturing of a wide range of products and applications, including washers, knives, saws, springs, pneumatic tools, refrigerators, files – even stilettos.

Alloyed steels

In some cases, carbon steels include alloying elements in their chemical composition, the most common being manganese and silicon.
Other alloying elements include chromium, nickel, vanadium, molybdenum, boron, and phosphorous and residual sulfur. These alloy steels are used in a variety of products, including auto parts, agricultural equipment, saws, cutlery, and tools.
There are also micro-alloyed carbon steels, which typically have a low carbon content and very small amounts of niobium, vanadium, titanium, molybdenum, and/or nitrogen. These steels offer good weldability.
